Thursday, September 12

Our morning was spent at the pond.  We sketched some deciduous and coniferous trees and their leaves and discussed characteristics that distinguish the two types of trees.  We were also recording living and non-living things that we saw.

We also talked about one tree we saw that is a coniferous tree but it also loses its leaves.  Remember your job tonight is to find out the name of the tree.  Here is a picture from today.

In math, we used what we know about multiplying by powers of 10 to create estimates when we are multiplying.  Making an estimate and then determining if it is an underestimate (the actual product will be greater than the estimate) or an overestimate (the actual product will be less than the estimate) will help us know if our answers are reasonable. We then found the actual product using the area model (box method) of multiplication.

Example 64 x 23   Estimate 60 x 20 = 1200 This is an underestimate.
             76 x 28   Estimate 80 x 30 = 2400  This is an overestimate.

This afternoon we worked on our self-portraits in the style of Roy Lichtenstein.  We are keeping them a secret, but they will be on display for you to see at our Open House next Thursday.

Reminders:
- Immunization forms are due back tomorrow
- Return patrol form if you are interested in being a patrol this year
- Sell ADmazing coupon books! $10.50 from each book sold by individual students will go towards reducing their cost of Outdoor School in the spring
- Open House- Thursday, September 16 from 4:30 - 6
