Wednesday, December 18

Our class was the lucky winner in a draw for an extra lacrosse class to start our day!  The program was provided free to our school by

We wrote some letters to our buddies to add to the artwork we created for them.

We had some time to finish up work that was unfinished as we were missing many students today.  If we were finished everything, we worked on an art graph.

We had some team building time as a class and played a game of charades.  It was great to see everyone engaged and supportive of each other as some clues were more difficult than others.

Our afternoon started with lacrosse and then we met with our buddies to make cards to go with the items that our school has collected for the Canadian Mental Health Association.

Reminders:
- Bring in items in support of the Canadian Mental Health Association (see post from yesterday for details)
- We are also collecting food items for the Mayor's Food Drive.
- Last day of classes before winter break is tomorrow and it is Pajama Day.  It is an 11:45 am dismissal.
- First day of classes in 2020- Tuesday, January 7
- Students are bringing home a voucher for 2 tickets to a Calgary Roughnecks lacrosse game on either Feb. 8 Feb. 29 or March 13.

Tuesday, December 17

Our morning work task from yesterday was:
Would you rather have someone give you $100 or give $1000 to the charity of your choice? Support your choice in a paragraph with specific details.
Our choices today were almost unanimous!  Students had many great reasons for giving $1000 to charity instead of having $100 for themselves.

In math, students needed to figure out how many presents would have been given over the 12 days.  Students realized that the problem was more complicated than just counting the items on the page and came up with different strategies to the answer.  Students were also asked to write their thinking and the steps they took to reach the solution.

The Gingerbread Man was loose in Bridlewood School!  We had the opportunity to provide leadership for all 3 grade 1 classes today as they followed a series of clues to try and find him.  It was great to see everyone so engaged and supportive of the younger students in our school.  I know they appreciated your leadership!

Students decided that they would like to complete an art project for our buddies before the winter break.  Since the grade 1's are learning about the seasons and we have learned about trees and forests, students decided they would like to create an art piece for their buddy that showed a tree in the four different seasons.  Students used their creativity and planned and painted their trees.  Can you see the four different seasons in our paintings?

When our art was complete, we worked on a math problem.  We had the choice to work alone or in a small group.
At this time of year, many postal workers have to work overtime, so a supervisor at one large post office planned a late-night snack for the employees.  She ordered 1 large pizza for every two workers, 1 bag of potato chips for every three workers, and 1 two-litre bottle of cola for every four workers.  When the order arrived, 26 items were delivered.  How many employees were working that evening?

Reminders:
- Please return your blue assessment folder if you haven't already done so (we are still waiting for 1)
- Bring in items in support of the Canadian Mental Health Association (see post from yesterday for details)
- We are also collecting food items for the Mayor's Food Drive.
- Last day of classes before winter break is Thursday, Dec.19 and it is Pajama Day.  It is an 11:45 am dismissal on this day.

Wednesday, December 11

Our morning work task today was:
Would you rather be born with an elephant trunk or a giraffe neck?  Support your thinking in a paragraph with specific details.

Since beginning our "would you rather" prompts, students are more consistently including opening sentences which state what they have chosen, but do not contain specific details.  Students are also varying the transition words they are choosing (First, Another reason, Lastly, The third reason)/ . They are including reasons in support of their choice, and some are also including why they would not choose the other choice.  Some are also including closing sentences.
Our goal is to include specific details to support our reasons.  For example, rather than just saying that, "having an elephant trunk would allow you to eat and drink and do something else with your hands," state something specific that you would like to do with your hands while you use your elephant trunk to eat and drink.

The ratios that related to the choices we made today are:

In math we were working on a new problem, Crossing the River.  We needed to figure out the number of trips to get 8 adults and 2 children across to the other side of the river.  There was a small row boat which could hold 2 children, 1 child or 1 adult.  Then we needed to find the number of trips for 12 adults, 100 adults and 1000 adults and two kids.  Finding the pattern rule made this much easier.

We had our evidence and investigation assessment this afternoon.

Our day finished with our "Somewhere in the World Right Now" writing.  We met with a peer to receive some feedback and then had time to type up our final copy.

Reminders:

  • Please return your blue assessment folder if you haven't already done so (we are still waiting for 3)
  • Bring in items in support of the Canadian Mental Health Association (see post from yesterday for details)
  • We are also collecting food items for the Mayor's Food Drive.

Tuesday, December 10

Our morning work task today was:
Would you rather find out that you parents are secret spies or aliens?  Support your choice in a paragraph with specific details.

Students felt that as a class our writing had improved since yesterday as most of us were including opening sentences, transition words and closing sentences.

We found that 14 people would rather have secret spies for parents and 7 would like parents to have parents that were aliens.  This led to a discussion of ratio which we will be learning about in the new year.

We had time today to continue our writing based on the book, "Somewhere in the World Today."  We discussed the difference between editing and revising.

As a class, we revised what we had written together yesterday.  Next, it was our turn to revise our own work.

In math, we were looking at how we could graph a pattern.  Students were creating tables t represent increasing patterns made with tiles.  Then they created graphs of the information and graphed the information in an input/output table.  The last step, was to record the information on a graph in an input/output table.

Our day finished with some time to review for our science assessment tomorrow.

Reminders:

  • Please return your blue assessment folder if you haven't already done so
  • Evidence and Investigation assessment tomorrow
  • Bring in items in support of the Canadian Mental Health Association (see post from yesterday for details)
  • We are also collecting food items for the Mayor's Food Drive.

Monday, December 9

Our morning work task today was:
Would you rather have a pet that was a giant hamster or a tiny elephant?  Support your choice in a paragraph with specific details.

We shared our paragraphs with the class and discussed what made a good paragraph.  We brainstormed some opening sentences we could use as many students made a choice and began to list their reasons in their first sentence.

A planning tool we could use for our paragraphs is:

What?
Why?
Why?
Why?

What was that again?

In math, we continued our work with plotting ordered pairs on a coordinate plane.  Today we also needed to identify the coordinates of points that were plotted on a grid already.

We had time to continue on with our Evidence and Investigation study page that we started last week in preparation for our test on Wednesday.

We read the story, "Somewhere in the World Right Now".  It contains descriptions of what someone could be doing in the world right now.  For example, "Somewhere night has fallen.  Clouds cushion the moon as it climbs across the sky.  An alligator sleeps in an inky swamp beneath a tapestry of stars."  We then began to write our own "Somewhere in the World" stories.

Our day finished with buddies.

Reminders:
Please return your blue assessment folder
Evidence and Investigation assessment of Wednesday.

Tuesday, December 3

In math today, we were given input/output tables and needed to determine the pattern rule.  We started with one step rules such as + 6 or x 4 and moved to two step rules such as x 3 + 1.  Once we determined the rule, we needed to extend the table with 4 more input numbers and apply the rule to determine the output numbers.

We learned more about Wassily Kandinsky, the artist we did our art critique on yesterday, and created an art piece based on some of his artwork.  We listened to a piece of music he listened to when he created some of his artwork as inspiration.  As we were painting, we needed to think about what we wanted to say with our art and the mood or feeling we were trying to get across.  It is interesting to see how different and unique all of our backgrounds are.  A preview is below.  You can see the final products at parent/teacher conferences.

Once we had added in the black lines, it was time to write about our art.  We gave our art a title and wrote why we chose that title.  We also talked about the colours we used, the feeling we were trying to create and what the focal point in our art is.

Reminders:
- Book Fair sales Wednesday and Thursday as well as at conferences
- Conferences are  on Thursday evening and Friday.  Booking is open.  Thursday is an early dismissal day (11:45).  There is no school for students on Friday.
- Trees and Forests assessment coming home.  Please sign and return the blue folder.

Monday, December 2

We arrived at school this morning to find that a crime had been committed in our classroom! Our shelf and binders were missing!  Using what we have learned about handwriting analysis, we examined the note that had been left and compared it to writing samples from four possible suspects to try and determine who the guilty person was.  Based on our analysis, most of us thought the note was written by one of the  suspects.  We then learned about chromatography.  See the video below.  Ms. Steeves had collected a black marker from each of the suspect's rooms.  In small groups, we used chromatography to see what colours each of the black felts was made of.  Ms. Steeves then cut up the note and we tested it.  We determined that the pen used to write the note belonged to the same suspect.  This happened to be the suspect most of us had identified after the handwriting analysis.  We presented the evidence to the suspect and they confessed and our shelf and binders were returned to the class.  It was great to see everyone putting their investigative skills to the test and also for remaining objective throughout the investigation.

We finished our day with an art critique of the following painting by Wassily Kandinsky.  We will be creating our own artwork using this as inspiration this week.

Reminders:
- Book Fair preview tomorrow

- Conferences are  on Thursday evening and Friday.  Booking is open.  Thursday is an early dismissal day (11:45).  There is no school for students on Friday.
