Our morning work task today was:
Would you use a series of points (discrete data) or a line graph (continuous data) to display each set of data?  Explain your choices.

A) the number of goals scored by the Calgary Flames each week during the 2018-2019 season
B) the temperature of a cup of boiling water as it cools
C) the mass of a puppy in its first year
D) the distance traveled by a cross-country skier as she completes the course

We completed the page in our creative journals on the Iroquois.

We continued with our newspapers and many students were printing today.  We are looking forward to sharing them with you at our learning celebration on Thursday.

Students received written feedback on their Tomatosphere news articles and had time to make revisions on the computer.  Students then moved to their other articles related to plants being grown in space.

We watched the news story, "NASA Spacecraft's discovery redefines planet formation theory," below from Global National news this week.

We watched and discussed the videos about the Iroquois and how the Great Law of Peace came to be and the nations worked together as one.

We had gym outside this afternoon and also had some time to plan buildings in small groups for the lunar colony that will be on our moonscape.

Tuesday, February 18

We were very surprised to see how much our tomatoes had grown over the past 5 days.  We measured the height and made observations with our partners.  We also added germination data for Feb. 13.  We have not had any new tomatoes germinate since that date, so we were able to submit our results and find out which seeds had been to space.  Our Earth seed germination rate was almost identical to the Canadian average, while our space seed germination rate was twice the Canadian average.  Some of our tomatoes were ready for transplanting into so we each did that with one tomato plant today.

We are writing a news article on Tomatosphere and our experience.  We brainstormed important information together and then completed an inverted triangle planner.  Our first paragraphs needed to have the 5Ws.  We also needed 3 paragraphs in the body of our articles and finally a closing paragraph.  We also needed to include at least 1 quote.  We had some time to begin typing our articles this afternoon.

Please note you DO NOT need to attend the entire time, but please allow for approximately

one - half hour to share in your child’s celebration. Everything will wrap up at 7:00, so we encourage you to come no later than 6:30pm.

Kind Regards,

Grade 6 Team

Today we read an article about growing plants in space.  We used this information and the other article we read to plan our own article about plants in space.  We had some time at the end of the day to begin writing our articles.

We had a presentation about the Late French Immersion program at Woodman Junior High.  Students who expressed interest are bringing home a brochure with more information.  Everyone is invited to attend an information session at Woodman Junior High on Thursday, Feb. 20 from 6:30 - 8.  Any questions about the program can be answered by Woodman staff at that time.

Tuesday, February 11

Our morning work today was:

We began to learn about writing a newspaper article.  We know that newspaper articles are written in paragraphs and are about real life issues and events that have either happened or are going to happen.  Articles are business like and not flowery and descriptive.  They also contain quotes from people involved in some way.  We did a group write of an article about the 2016 Fort McMurray flood using given information.  We then worked to write our own articles with a partner using the same information.

In math we are writing the coordinates for the buildings on our blueprint and are calculating the area and perimeter of our buildings using a formula for the square and rectangle shaped buildings.

We had time to write about the essential buildings we have chosen to include in our lunar colonies and supported our choices with specific reasons.

Reminders:
  • Please return completed Outdoor School forms and payment by Wed. Feb. 12.  The ODS fee can be paid through My CBE account.
  • Complete a moon journal entry
  • Yearbook orders accepted until the end of February.

Monday, February 10

In math today, we were looking at different ways that we could represent portions of a container.  We discovered that some containers could be represented in more than one way (fraction, percent, decimal) while others could only easily be represented with a fraction.

We began to create a graph showing the growth of our tomatoes.  In partners, students are measuring the height of one L and one M seed tomato and creating a line graph as the growth is continuous data.  We are also recording the number of leaves on each plant.

We began our blueprints for our lunar colony.  Through the project, students will be using what they know about area, perimeter, volume, plotting coordinates on a Cartesian plane, fractions and percent.  We look forward to sharing our work with you at our upcoming learning celebration.

Friday, February 7

The Great Law of Peace was an important part of the Iroquois Confederacy.  To help us better understand this, we listened to a story that explained how Hiawatha and the Peacemaker showed the 5 nations (Oneida, Seneca, Cayuga, Onondaga, Mohawk) that rather than fighting against each other, they were stronger when they worked together.

It is about one month until Outdoor School.  In preparation for this, all 3 grade 6 classes got together in the gym and participated in some team building activities.  It was great to see the teamwork, cooperation and communication  that happened in each of the groups as you met the challenges you were presented with.

We checked on our tomatoes.  We haven't had any new L seeds germinate for a few days, but we have had a few more M seeds germinate recently.

We also had a little time to work on our questions related to the Iroquois.

Friday journals are coming home today.  Our day finished with Thank You Friday.

Reminders:

  • Please return completed Outdoor School forms and payment by Feb. 12.  The ODS fee can be paid through My CBE account.
  • Complete a moon journal entry each day this weekend and bring your journals to school on Monday

Thursday, February 6

Our day started with reading and annotating the article, "Why Choose Tomatoes? – Selecting Plants for Space Travel" individually.  We then joined with a partner to discuss what we had read.  Our next task was to summarize the article.  A summary is a brief statement that includes only the main points.

Kristina Koch is one of 3 astronauts that returned to Earth from the ISS today.  Her mission of 328 days was the longest single space flight by any woman in history.  On the mission, she was involved with experiments for future missions to the Moon and eventually Mars.

We watched a summary video of the landing and a few parts from the beginning of the extended landing.

Extended video

We looked at the two graphics about the astronauts to see what we could learn about them.

In math, we had students share the area and perimeter for the various places in the school that they measured yesterday using the trundle wheels.

This afternoon, our buddies shared their work for their learning celebration tonight with us.  It is great to see all that they are learning and we look forward to sharing our learning with them before our learning celebration.

Reminders:

  • Please return completed Outdoor School forms and payment by Feb. 12.  The ODS fee can be paid through My CBE account.
  • Complete a moon journal entry

Mon. Feb. 3 - Wed. Feb 5

This week we have continued our work around area, perimeter and volume.  We will be designing a lunar colony individually and then as a class.  Today we created a grid on our moonscape and added in coordinates.  Using the coordinates, we added craters to our own blueprints.

We continued reading Malala.

We read the article about a small group of Edmonton students who will have their science experiment relating to brine shrimp on the ISS this summer.  As they were reading, students were annotating their thinking, and then wrote the 5W's (who, what, when, where, why).  Shrimp in Space

We used the trundle wheels in small groups to determine the area and perimeter of a variety of spaces in the school.  This will help us when we are designing our lunar colony.
