Tuesday, September 10

Today we talked about another reading comprehension strategy- Infer.  We looked at the cartoon below from the Editorial page of the Calgary Herald today and used our inferencing skills to figure out what it was about.

We started our Free Writing journals today.  This is a time where we can choose the topic that we would like to write about.  It could be a story, song, poem, facts about ______, directions to ________ , what we did on our weekend or vacation or an upcoming event.  We wrote for 15 minutes today.  Thanks to those that took a chance to share what they had written with the class.

We practiced multiplying by powers of 10.  Some examples were:

30 x 10       20 x 40         300 x 60        800 x 800

The school nurse came and did a presentation on our upcoming immunizations.  A package with forms is coming home with students who will need vaccines.  Please complete the forms and return them to the school by Friday.

We shared our thoughts on image from yesterday.
We Wonder:
- how old the tree is
- if this tree has been through a fire or flood
- why the tree is shaped like this
- if this tree is a home to animals
- what the inspiration for this picture was
- where the picture was taken
- who the photographer is
- how long has the tree been here
- what kind of tree is it
- what time of day it was
- why is there only one tree there
- did someone plant the tree

- are there other trees around

We learned that it is The Methusela tree and it is a bristlecone pine.  It is located near Las Vegas and is almost 5000 years old.  Then we brainstormed what we know about trees and what we wonder about trees.

We continued with Ugly.  One part that really stood out for us was, "Humans are like social Legos.  We connect together with families.  We build lives with friends.  On our own, we're just one piece.  When we come together in groups, we make amazing things."
